Round 15 Teams: Brandon Smith could be axed over disciplinary breach, Penrith duo back, Origin hopefuls pushing to return

Brandon Smith could be stood down by the Roosters after he failed to turn up for a mid-season review during their bye week.

The Kiwi hooker has been in modest form this season after a laclustre first year at the club following his high-profile switch from Melbourne.

According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, he has been issued with a breach notice by the club and could be dropped for this Saturday’s showdown with Parramatta at CommBank Stadium.

Smith admitted “it was a mistake from my end” when asked why he did not attend the team meeting last Monday.

He recently exercised the option in his lucrative deal to stay at the Roosters next year but has struggled to make an impact at the club with Connor Watson giving better value for money as a dummy-half option.

Watson should be right to face the Eels after a recent throat injury while veteran prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (hamstring) is a maybe.

Souths skipper Cameron Murray has only an “outside chance” of recovering from injury in time for South Sydney’s last game before teams are picked for State of Origin II, interim coach Ben Hornby says.

He is likely to be named in the extended squad to face Gold Coast on Saturday with a final decision made late in the week on whether he is over his hip problem which has kept him out since May 2.

Panthers duo Liam Martin and Dylan Edwards are expected to be fit for selection for the second State of Origin fixture by lining up on Sunday in Newcastle.

Martin picked up a toe injury stemming from Wednesday’s series-opening 38-10 loss to Queensland, while Edwards missed the chance to make his Blues debut after he was ruled out with a quad issue.

They sat out the Panthers’ clash with Manly on Sunday but are likely to line up in next weekend’s road game against the Knights.

Their anticipated inclusions will be music to the ears of Blues coach Michael Maguire whose side head to Melbourne’s MCG on June 26 fighting to keep the series alive.

Knights centre Bradman Best is hopeful of making a comeback from a hamstring problem to press his claims for the NSW centre spot vacated by Joseph Suaalii’s four-game ban for his hit on Reece Walsh.

Front-rower Daniel Saifiti (knee) is also pushing to play.

The Brisbane fullback will sit out Friday’s Accor Stadium showdown with Souths due to the NRL’s 11-day stand-down policy for category-one concussions.

North Queensland should get Origin duo Murray Taulagi (shoulder) and Reece Robson (neck) back for their trip to Canberra on Friday while prop Jordan McLean (calf) is an outside chance.

Former Maroons forward Corey Horsburgh (groin) is hoping to return after a lengthy absence for the Raiders.

Warriors stars Shaun Johnson (pec) and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (hamstring) could be back for their home game sellout against Melbourne on Saturday.

Canberra vs North Qld at GIO Stadium: 6pm, Friday June 14

Raiders: Corey Horsburgh (groin) is hoping to return after a lengthy absence in a major boost to the Canberra pack.

Cowboys: Origin duo Murray Taulagi (shoulder) and Reece Robson (neck) are due to come back after missing the loss to the Warriors post Origin while prop Jordan McLean (calf) is an outside chance.

Sth Sydney vs Brisbane at Accor Stadium: 8pm, Friday June 14

Rabbitohs: Cameron Murray is hoping to be right to play after sitting out more than a month with a hip injury while utility forward Siliva Havili is under a cloud with a calf complaint.

Broncos: Reece Walsh will not be able to play due to the concussion protocols so Tristan Sailor will remain at fullback despite a poor showing in the loss to Cronulla.

Wests vs Gold Coast at Leichhardt Oval: 3pm, Saturday June 15

Tigers: Benji Marshall is threatening to wield the axe after they were thrashed by the Dragons in Wollongong. Aidan Sezer returns from suspension so Bud Sullivan is likely to make way after an unhappy night against his former club.

Titans: Phil Sami (hamstring) is aiming to return but AJ Brimson’s groin problem will keep him out another couple of weeks.

Warriors vs Melbourne at Go Media Stadium: 5.30pm, Saturday June 15

Warriors: Shaun Johnson (pectoral) and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (hamstring) are closing in on returns.

Storm: Winger Will Warbrick (groin) and veteran forward Tepai Moeroa (back) are trying to prove their fitness for the trip to Auckland.

Parramatta vs Sydney at CommBank Stadium: 7.35pm, Saturday June 15

Eels: It’s a short turnaround for Parramatta but Ryan Matterson is unlikely to be available due to the concerning after-effects from a recent head knock.

Roosters: Brandon Smith could be dropped for disciplinary reasons while Connor Watson (throat) and veteran prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (hamstring) are each under an injury cloud.

Manly vs St George Illawarra at 4 Pines Park: 2pm, Sunday June 16

Sea Eagles: Lachlan Croker’s nagging neck injury will keep him sidelined for at least another week.

Dragons: Shane Flanagan is unlikely to change a winning combination but winger Mikaele Ravalawa is facing a ban at NSW Cup level after he was sent off after abusing a match official. Ravalawa is understood to have sworn twice at a touch judge after a try was awarded, before being sent from the field.
