The Matildas who may be on the move at club level after the Paris Olympics

Since the record-breaking 2023 World Cup, international interest in the Matildas has grown tremendously.

In the past 12 months, Katrina Gorry, Charli Grant, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Hayley Raso are just some of the Matildas stars that have made big moves to top leagues.

With contracts set to expire and rumours of player dissatisfaction, some Matildas could be set for change this winter.

Here’s a rundown of where some of the key players are at and where they could be heading.

Michelle Heyman

The legend and two-time Julie Dolan medallist for best player in the A-League has not yet penned a new contract with Canberra United.

The existence of the capital’s only professional football club was under threat due to financial issues, leaving the player’s futures uncertain.

However, the club has since been confirmed to continue in the 2024-2025 A-League season. No news has been released on any contract renewals yet, but the club has confirmed that players are in negotiations.

The Matildas striker, who has spent 12 years at the club, has previously expressed a desire to stay at Canberra United if possible.

However, Heyman would certainly be commanding interest as the all-time top scorer in the A-League, and as this season’s Golden Boot winner.

Back in March, Heyman confirmed that rival clubs in the League were already circling Canberra United players.

In the last week some of the cub’s star players, including U-23 Matildas’ Chloe Lincoln and Sasha Grove, have announced their departures from the club.

With Canberra United likely operating on a financially constrained budget, uncertainty remains over whether they will be able to keep the Matildas star.

Mackenzie Arnold

Australia’s ‘Minister for Defence’ is out of contract with English Super League Club West Ham this June. Arnold, who is currently captain at West Ham, has been previously linked with English giants Manchester United.

The ‘Red Devils’ may bid farewell to their current first-choice goalkeeper, England’s Mary Earps, and Arnold has been touted as a worthy replacement.

Arnold has been a big part of the Hammers this season, playing 19 out of 22 matches.

Voted the club’s Player of the Season, her departure would represent a big loss for West Ham.

Hayley Raso

In June 2023, the World Cup Hero became the first Australian, male or female, to sign for giants Real Madrid.

However, the Matildas winger has struggled for game time at the Spanish club, coming off the bench with about 20 minutes left to play for most games.

Despite the limited game time, the speedy winger has managed six direct goal contributions in the league.

Spanish media has reported that Raso is unhappy with her game time and is seeking an exit in this transfer window.

Raso has previously played for Manchester City and Everton in the Women’s Super League, as well as for clubs in both Australia and the US.

Only time will tell where Raso, who finished 16th in the prestigious Ballon D’Or this year, will end up.

Cortnee Vine

Sydney FC fans are eagerly waiting to know if they will get to see more Vine Time down under.

Another Matildas attacker who has shone in the A-League, Vine signed a one-year contract extension with the Sky Blues after the Women’s World Cup.

With that contract now set to expire, the rapid winger is said to be fielding a lot of international interest. Speaking to ESPN, Vine shared that “There’s a few clubs interested overseas”, but that she had to “weigh it all up” and think about whether she wanted to say a temporary goodbye to her life in Australia.

Sydney FC head coach Ante Jurić admitted that Vine and goalkeeper Jada Whyman were two players he could see his side losing in this transfer window.

In news that may bolster fans’ hopes, the Sky Blues recently announced the departure of six members of their back-to-back Championship-winning side, but Vine was not one of them.

Vine’s selection into the Matildas Olympic squad is only likely to have sparked an increase in international interest in the winger.

Her Olympic performance may play a big role in deciding where the Sydneysider, whose dream club is Kerr’s Chelsea, ends up.

The Matildas are now enjoying a well-deserved break before flying to Europe for Olympic preparation. While they remain focused on performing their best, many will also be thinking about their next move.
