From power hitters to record run-scorers and dangerous wicket-takers: An IPL fan’s favourite XI from the 2024 season
I was glued to the excitement of this year’s IPL season, and below are some of the stars that caught my eye and I enjoyed watching with reasons.
I have the joy of watching great cricketers for pure enjoyment and love of cricket without the burden of over analysing or being overly critical.
I encourage others to watch for that joy and look forward to you sharing your favourites from IPL2024 here in the comments.
Top order
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head – Abhishek and Head have broken records and changed the power play. Sure, they faltered in the final but their influence will stay.
Yashasvi Jaiswal – I just love watching him play. Power with elegance and class and love his back story.
Middle order
Heinrich Klaasen – He’s a quality player, big runs when needed. Played a great innings to get to Sunrisers Hyderabad into the final.
Venkatesh Iyer – He’s a big hitter, but smooth and cool under pressure.
All-rounder
Andre Russell – A big hitter and bowls a hard ball and was a big part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ success in winning the trophy.
Wicket keeper
MS Dhoni – Let’s bow down and acknowledge him. He brings the crowd noise and the excitement, and the sea of fans in yellow. At age 42 he’s still a great keeper and hitter.
Spinner
Varun Chakravarthy – He’s not got the smoothest technique to watch but smartest spinner in the big games and big part of that successful KKR bowling attack.
Fast bowlers
Mitchell Starc – He is Australia’s greatest white ball fast bowler and bowled the best ball of the tournament in the final.
Jasprit Bumrah – He is Indias greatest fast bowler ever all formats. Loved the yorkers this IPL and his economy rate was insanely good.
Mayank Yadav – He bowled with pure speed and rushed some very good batters. He has a big future if gets over injuries and it was great to watch his express bowling.
Special mentions
Virat Kohli – best all format batter ever and still makes it look easy.
Shahbaz Ahmed – A great spell vs Rajasthan Royals and I really enjoyed the lead in when he got Ashwin out caught behind. Reminded me of some of Jadeja’s great spells.
Avesh Khan – I have not seen him much before, but I was super impressed with his change of pace and variety and big personality on field.
Jake Fraser-McGurk – What a talent he is and what a future he has. I watched some of his innings on replay multiple times.
