Dylan Edwards’ State of Origin debut has been thrown into jeopardy just days out from Game 1 of the 2024 series, with the NSW and Penrith fullback reportedly suffering quad tightness at Blues training.

According to Nine‘s Danny Weidler, Edwards pulled up lame following NSW’s opposed training session on Saturday.

Former fullback and captain James Tedesco, who was left out of the Blues’ Game 1 team for Edwards, has reportedly been called into camp as standby should the Panthers star not come up.

It has been reported NSW coach Michael Maguire personally contacted Roosters coach Trent Robinson to gauge whether Tedesco would be available for Origin duty, with the champion veteran to feature in their match on Sunday against the North Queensland Cowboys regardless.

Edwards is still hopeful of proving his fitness for Wednesday’s series opener at Accor Stadium, but is now racing the clock with the match just four days away.

The 28-year old is, however, no stranger to battling through injury, having famously played in the Panthers’ 2021 NRL grand final triumph over the Rabbitohs with a broken foot.

“It’s devastating for Edwards,” former Cronulla and NSW star Wade Graham said on Triple M.

“You get selected, he’s worked so hard and been one of the best players in the competition for the last three or four years and picks up, even if it’s just a little niggle and still manages to get to the game, it’s disrupting to his preparation.

“It’s just not what you want after being on top of the world.”
