Veteran All Blacks sign through to 2027 World Cup, Scott Barrett ‘open’ to captaincy

All Blacks forwards Scott Barrett and Codie Taylor have committed to New Zealand rugby through to the 2027 World Cup in a boost for Scott Robertson’s rebuilding squad.

The contract extensions will also keep the duo at their Super Rugby Pacific club, the Canterbury Crusaders.

Barrett is seen as a potential successor to former All Blacks captain Sam Cane and is vital for New Zealand’s second row stocks following the departures of Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick.

“Representing my club and country has always been a privilege and to have the opportunity to put my hand up for another World Cup cycle was a big motivation,” 30-year-old Barrett said in a statement on Thursday.

“It’s great to have certainty for myself, Hannah, and our young son, and we’re excited about the next chapter.”

He later told a media conference he would consider the All Blacks captaincy a great honour if it came his way but his first goal was to return to fitness a month out from the opening Test against England.

“I’m tracking all right,” Barrett said. “I’ve had a bulged disc in my back but it’s settling down.”

Barrett’s lack of time with the Crusaders’ season played a major role in their failure to make the finals.

“I’d be 50/50 for a game this week so I’m still getting a plan together for the next month on how I can get back to rugby. I’m super keen to get back and play – whether that’s club rugby or facilitated training I’m not too sure, but I’m certainly keen to get out and play.”

As for the captaincy, he said: “It’s something I’d be open to, but my focus right now is to get out on the park. It would be a huge honour. Those decisions are fully on Razor (Scott Robertson) and we’ve had conversations around the All Black environment, but ultimately the decision sits with him.”

Hooker Taylor, 33, will target another World Cup win after being a member of New Zealand’s triumphant 2015 squad in England.

“Having the opportunity to play through another World Cup cycle and pull on the jerseys I love for a few more years is awesome,” said the 85-Test forward.

“I’m feeling rejuvenated and excited about what’s to come.”

Runners-up at last year’s World Cup in France, the All Blacks start their international season with a two-Test home series against England next month.
